►What’s in the Playlist: Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold

Posted by Mercenary Spark on May 22, 2008

May’s ending and it’s time to change focus. Since my album reviews and the videos aren’t commented (even if they are the most-viewed), and the Artist and Song of the Week page was ignored (nobody nominated ther songs in the right place), I’ll begin a weekly, What’s in the Playlist section where I’ll give you reccomendations on what to put in your playlist, as well as give you the chance to preview the song right here in my blog (in the trusty In the Corner box). If you want a song to be feaured on What’s in the Playlist, post the name of the song and artist in the Artist and Song of the Week page.

This week, I’ll start off with a reccomendation from mario64mario (nominated for Song of the Week, but nobody voted). The song is one of the best, if not the best, from Avenged Sevenfold. Afterlife starts off with strings (yes, strings), which go really well in the song. The song has some tight riffs, especially before the chorus and at the end. Almost the entire song is surprisingly melodic and catchy for a hard rock song. The lyrics are about a guy who went into heaven still young, and although he’s there to see his girlfriend, he wants to go back because he feels it’s not the right place for him. The message is open for interpretation, and in my opinion, it’s a message that perfection=monotony=boredom.

Rating: 8/10 – A great hard-rock song, but not that great to grant a 9.

Below are the lyrics and the video. ↓↓↓

Warning: The song contains one drug reference and the video contains a spider (just in case, I don’t want to cause you stroke).

Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you’ve seen
So unsure but it seems, ’cause we’ve been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
Of your afterlife here so stay, you’ll be back here soon anyway

I see a distant light, my girl this can’t be right
Such a surreal place to see so how did this come to be
Arrived too early

And when I think of all the places I just don’t belong
I’ve come to grips with life and realize this is going too far

I don’t belong here, we gotta move on dear, escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I’m right to move on and on, far away from here

A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain
Can leave this place but refrain, ’cause we’ve been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
Of your afterlife here so stay, you’ll be back here soon anyway

This peace on earth’s not right (with my back against the wall)
No pain or sign of time (I’m much too young to fall)
So out of place don’t wanna stay, I feel wrong and that’s my sign
I’ve made up my mind

Gave me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye
Please understand I have to leave and carry on my own life

I don’t belong here, I gotta move on dear, escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I’m right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I’ll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I’d hope you might
Take me back inside when the time is right

Loved ones back home all crying ’cause they’re already missing me
I pray by the grace of God that there’s somebody listening
Give me a chance to be that person I wanna be
(I am unbroken; I’m choking on this ecstasy)
Oh Lord I’ll try so hard but you gotta let go of me
(Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live)

I don’t belong here, I gotta move on dear, escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I’m right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I’ll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I’d hope you might
Take me back inside when the time is right

The song is currently In the Corner, from where you can add it to your playlist.

  1. I LOVE that song!!!!! It’s one of the higher points on the latest A7X album, and it kind of reminds me of my deceased brother.

  2. I’m sorry and I apologize if that brought back any bad memories. 😦

  3. No, no, don’t you ever worry about that Merc.

I’m sorry I brought that up.

  4. It’s ok.

Of the self-titled album, A Little Piece of Heaven also stands out as one of the best.

  5. Also, Brompton Cocktail is a good one.
